5 Lessons From My First Week At Onnit

Coming to Texas and training at Onnit has been an incredible experience.

The people, the equipment, the energy… if you can get here and experience it yourself, you should!

If you can’t, here are the 5 big lessons I’ve learned during my first week here:

#1: It’s all about the people

Being in a community of people who are working hard pushing themselves is infectious.

No different than my time at Westside Barbell, at least half the success of the members at gyms like this comes from being around other people who are pushing their limits.

#2: Weird stuff works

I’ve seen more weird equipment, workout routines and kettlebells, maces and ropes in the last week than I’ve seen in the last decade before getting here!

What’s interesting about that unless you saw them training you wouldn’t be able to guess who does what, because everyone is in amazing shape!

It’s easy to get caught up in the “right” program or equipment, but Onnit is proof it’s about effort more than anything else.

#3: It’s a give and take

Every great lifter or athlete I’ve ever met followed the same basic system: they give advice to people who are weak where they’re strong and they take advice from people who are strong where they’re weak.

There’s no ego involved, it’s everyone working together to get better and make each other better. The saying goes, “A rising tide raises all boats” and this is obvious here.

#4: They really mean optimize everything

Whether it’s the unique equipment they’ve collected, the theragun armoury or even the squatty-potty in the bathroom… they truly want total human optimization.

It’s easy to get caught up in self improvement with a singular focus, but all that does it create weak links that will hold you back later.

That is NOT a problem here.

#5: They don’t understand Texas heat

Everyone here has a love affair with the sauna… which seems great until you realize Texas is just a massive, open air sauna.

I’ve gotten pulled into a few sauna sessions, and have to admit they make me feel great, but a heads up if you ever visit from a colder climate like me… they don’t have a clue how hot it really is!
